Camus and the Absurd: What If "What's the Point?" Is the Right Question
Camus took the question of meaninglessness more seriously than almost anyone — and refused both easy exits. What remains is a stance you can actually live.
The question usually arrives quietly, at an odd hour: what is the point of any of it? The job gets done, the family gets fed, the goals get reached — and somewhere behind it all, a silence. Most advice rushes to fill that silence. Albert Camus did something rarer: he sat down inside it and looked around.
The machinery
Camus's starting observation, laid out in The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), is structural. Human beings arrive with a hunger for meaning — we cannot help asking why. The universe, as far as anyone can honestly tell, does not answer. The absurd is not the world being ridiculous; it is the collision between our demand for meaning and the world's silence. Neither side alone is absurd. The clash is.
From there, Camus examines the exits. The first is literal despair — if life has no cosmic meaning, why continue? He treats this as the serious philosophical question and answers no: meaninglessness is not a reason to stop living, because living was never conditional on the universe's approval. The second exit is subtler and, he thought, more common: the leap — grabbing a ready-made system of meaning and declaring the question closed. He called this philosophical suicide: killing the question instead of yourself. Both exits share a structure — they cannot bear the tension, so they abolish it.
Camus's alternative is revolt: keep the question open and live anyway — fully, lucidly, without appeal to a final justification. His image is Sisyphus, condemned to roll a boulder uphill forever. The gods designed it as the perfect punishment; Camus notices the flaw in their design. Walking back down, aware, unbroken, Sisyphus owns his rock in a way the gods cannot touch: "One must imagine Sisyphus happy." Meaning, on this account, is not found. It is made — in full knowledge that the universe didn't supply it, which is precisely what makes it yours.
