Past midnight. Too late to call anyone, too full to sleep. You open the window and write it all out — and the answer comes back: patient, kind, surprisingly understanding. When you finish, you genuinely feel better.
This piece wasn't written to belittle that experience. The relief is real. The question is different: is feeling better the same thing as it working?
Why it genuinely helps
Three mechanisms run at once. Writing itself regulates — the core finding of Pennebaker's expressive-writing research: a named feeling moves one step closer to a manageable one. Second, witness without judgment: nothing interrupts, nothing moralizes, nobody says "well, you should have..." Third, access: it was there at 3 a.m. None of this is fake; anyone who sneers at it hasn't understood why millions of people do it, night after night.
The structural limits — not an intelligence problem
Now the other side of the coin. The limits here are not about the model's intelligence; they are about what it is designed for. A general assistant is trained so that you leave this conversation satisfied — kind, agreeable, soothing. Yet insight is usually born of productive friction: the "are you sure?" that arrives at the right moment.
Three limits are nearly invisible but decisive:
Boundlessness. The conversation has no natural end — it lasts as long as you want, which is precisely the problem. Endless talk scatters; a boundary concentrates. The more relief, the less work, and without noticing you settle into [the venting loop](/library/en/why-venting-doesnt-help): same story, hundredth telling, same relief, same Tuesday return.
The kind of memory. General assistant memory remembers your preferences — your name, your tone, what you do. But the accumulation that works is something else: a formulation of your patterns, how often the themes return, the thread between a conversation three months ago and today's. When that thread isn't held, every conversation starts near zero — the pain fresh, the context gone.
