Being chased in dreams — not a warning, a rehearsal

What tradition says. Chase dreams have always drawn dark readings: an enemy working against you, a debt or an old wrong catching up, something you did following you home. Some traditions even name the pursuer — a rival, a spirit, a sign to watch your back. We're not here to mock those readings — dream traditions were humanity's first attempt to take the night seriously, and taking the night seriously is exactly what this page is for. But they were built before anyone could watch a sleeping brain work. What your brain was actually doing. If dreaming has a signature move, this is it. Being chased sits at or near the top of every "typical dreams" survey ever run — across countries, generations and languages — and it is the textbook case for the leading evolutionary account of dreaming: threat simulation. The neuroscientist Antti Revonsuo proposed that dreams evolved as a safe rehearsal space for the threats that mattered most to our ancestors — and no threat is older than something faster than you deciding you're worth catching. Notice what your dream self did: it didn't stand there. It ran, hid, ducked through doorways, held its breath behind a wall — real defensive programs, run on real motor and emotion circuitry, at zero real-world cost. And notice what the modern update of the theory adds: for a social species, today's pursuers are rarely wolves. They're human, or faceless altogether — because most of what chases a modern life is social: a conflict, a deadline, a conversation being outrun.
